The Use of Electron Microbeam Techniques in Metallurgical Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.

Extraction of quantitative parameters for describing the microstructure of solid oxide fuel cells.
Digital quantification of a two-dimensional structure was applied to a GDC(Gd₂O₃-doped CeO₂)/LSM(La₀.₈₅Sr₀.₁₅MnO₃) composite cathode employed for solid oxide fuel cells. With the aid of high-resolution imaging capability based on secondary and backscattered electron images, two-dimensional electron micrographs were converted to digital binary files using an image processing tool combined with t...

Tepe Sagzabad, a site situated on the Qazvin Plain of north-central Iran, was excavated from 1970 to 1998 by the Institute ofArchaeology of Tehran University. Recent excavations by H. Tala’i (1997-1999) yielded some metal artifacts dating to theEarly Iron Age. Ten of these copper-based samples were investigated using inductively coupled plasma optical emissionspectroscopy (ICP-OES), scanning el...
متن کاملPreliminary Results of the Beam Control and Detection of the Kirams Electron Microbeam System
The use of microbeam techniques in radiobiology dates back to the 1920’s with the work of Tschachotin who irradiated the spawn of sea urchins and frogs with X-ray and ultraviolet light. In 1953, Zirkle and Bloom designed and constructed a microbeam facility [1] that utilized a 2 MeV proton beam of 2.5 m in diameter. Their facility, however, did not allow counting the radiation particles that en...
متن کاملA study on the use of perturbation technique for analyzing the nonlinear forced response of piezoelectric microcantilevers
In this paper, a comparison is made between direct and indirect perturbation approaches to solve the non-linear vibration equations of a piezoelectrically actuated cantilever microbeam. In this comparison, the equation of motion is considered according to Euler-Bernoulli theory with considering the non-linear geometric and inertia terms resulted from shortening effect. In the direct perturbatio...

The study of nucleation mechanism of new grains during severe plastic deformation of magnesium alloys is of great importance to control the characteristics of final microstructures. To investigate the role of discontinuous recrystallization, a wrought AZ31 magnesium alloy was deformed by accumulative back extrusion process at 330 °C. The obtained microstructures were studied using optical and...
